Even though I prefer the Xbox controller for most games, I will agree that the PlayStation controller would probably help dante a lot. Being able to claw the d-pad would make style switching much easier. I prefer the Xbox layout for DMC 4 and 5, fwiw. I use the thumb for styles and index finger for directional input.

DmC Definitive edition is an excellent combat rebalancing of the original version. The changes to the game play make it a more skill dependent and thus highly reward game. The extra modes like Turbo and Hardcore combined with the 60 FPS create a twitch based, balls to the wall action experience.
When they expose the sphere inside them use the devil trigger to attack it. I used this strategy to do the secret mission in question last night, plus a lot of jumping to avoid their attacks (double jumping off walls makes it easier). Keep your distance and they usually don’t act to aggressively and give you a less frantic battle.
